2009 Sports Illustrated Sportsman Year Honoring Qh0FfXdwxGXl.jpg
The Jeter family--Dad, Mom, Derek and sister Sharlee--with the SI Sportsman of the Year trophy.
CAPTAIN, CHAMPION, SPORTSMAN

One of the impressive things about Derek Jeter is how he handles all the attention, the idolizing, the scrutiny. Never causes a whiff of embarrassment. Always says and does the right thing. And he’s done his thing rather well over a remarkable 15-year career as the Yankees’ stellar shortstop and classy captain.

Few athletes embrace pressure and responsibility better. Few exhibit better character. Of all the great players in the Yankees’ fabled history, fittingly it was Jeter who surpassed Lou Gehrig’s longstanding team record for most hits in 2009.

No question, 2009 was the ultimate banner season for Jeter. He responded to doubters with a superior performance, helping lead the Yankees to their first world championship in nine years. Consistently rising to the occasion at bat and in the field, he has never changed – an egoless, team-first player who represents and respects Yankee tradition as much as anyone.

Often compared to Gehrig, the team’s first captain who epitomized quiet leadership, Jeter is the latter-day pride of the Yankees. He is also the first Yankee to win Sports Illustrated’s coveted Sportsman of the Year award since it was created in 1954. The Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center, too, salutes Derek Jeter for his example of excellence.
