Yogi Berra Museum: Remember This HOF Speech?
“I guess the first thing I should do is thank everybody who made this day necessary.”
Those words from baseball legend and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Yogi Berra kicked off his short-but-sweet acceptance speech at his induction to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, which took place on Aug. 7, 1972.
Berra’s short speech befitted the quipster, a former Montclair resident who became known for infamous one-liners such as “It ain’t over ’til it’s over” and “You can observe a lot just by watching.”
